Sometimes you go out for a meal, have a few drinks, and feel a bit more spontaneous than usual. This happened sometime before Christmas, when we went out to a fundraising dinner in aid of Marlow Rowing Club, Katherine’s club. The club had a horrible fire two years ago and is working hard on plans to rebuild it whilst running the club out of portacabins. So there we were in a festive mood and somebody suggested that we auction a training session where the winner could come out in a boat with us. Brilliant idea. The auctioning was enthusiastic and a lovely lady called Claire ‘bought’ us.

So it gets around to April and we still haven’t gone, except now I’ve got a baby bump and my rowing kit doesn’t fit. Undaunted, we head to the river and poor Claire, who normally rows with one oar, realises we are going sculling with two. We briefly considered going Claire-style until it turns out that we all row on the same side and so we’d be stuck going around in circles. So we take out a quad, ably assisted by our fellow Olympian Sarah Winckless, and Claire gets to be in a double sandwich between me and Katherine.

Well my confession is that it was way too enjoyable, dangerously so. It was the first time we’ve been sculling since our race, and it was really good fun to be out on the river, trying little racing bursts and starts. Even the baby behaved and tucked out of the way so comfortably I almost forgot I was pregnant. Claire did a valiant job of putting up with us and we finished off with tea and scones. I could get used to that!
